The University of La Rioja is a public University, with extensive experience in research. It has a European Projects Unit dedicated exclusively to the management and support of European projects. Additionally, the University of La Rioja is part of a Consortium of Universities, called Campus Iberus, which is made up of 4 Universities (University of Zaragoza, Public University of Navarre, University of Girona, and University of La Rioja), which provides much greater capacity to participate in important projects by sharing and pooling staff, facilities, resources, etc.

Research at the University of La Rioja is based on research groups, which have research laboratories, research staff, and important previous research experience. The research group “Design, Modeling and Simulation in Science and Engineering” (DMSSI), led by Prof. Emilio Jiménez, is one of the largest research groups at the University of La Rioja, in terms of researchers and experience in international projects. The Group is composed of 9 doctors and 2 PhD students and leads an official consortium of research groups from Campus Iberus Universities, with a group from the Public University of Navarra, led by Prof. Juan Ignacio Latorre, and another group from the University of Zaragoza led by Prof. Carlos Javierre, who in total there are more than 25 doctors.

The leaders of the DMSSI group are, all of them full professor, Prof. Julio Blanco, expert in fabrication, Prof. Juan Carlos Saénz-Diez, expert in patents and renewable energy, Prof. Mercedes Perez, expert in materials science and metallurgy, Prof. Eduardo Martinez, expert in environmental impact and system engineering, and Prof. Emilio Jimenez, expert in simulation and Artificial Intelligence.
